Let’s explore San Jose and San Marco

If it’s the historical charm you are looking for in Jacksonville, let me introduce you to wonderful San Jose and San Marco.

Our city is so beautifully diverse! In this blog, we’ve been focusing our geographical efforts thus far on the many beach communities in Jacksonville. Let’s head inland now and check out two areas known for their history, architecture, and charm. San Jose and San Marco are both desirable and aspirational.  Let’s explore together…

San Jose

San Jose started as a Spanish land grant in the 1700’s and was then envisioned in more modern times as a refined residential community. The intent of new development was to keep it true to its Spanish roots. Claude Nolan, owner of Jacksonville’s oldest automotive dealership, purchased the land in 1920 and the community development began. It was an ambitious project that has become more common today in planned communities, but at the time, the inclusion of parks, residences, shops, a church and a hotel was novel – and very exciting! Spanish street names were chosen and buildings took on the Mediterranean Revival style – many still in evidence today.

San Jose continues to have other qualities that make it desirable too, including both the San Jose and Epping Forest Country Clubs, and the San Jose Episcopal and Bolles schools, and beautiful parks like Baker Park that offer gorgeous outdoor spaces for everyone.

While homes in San Jose come at a higher price point than many in Jacksonville, the lifestyle and amenities have kept it a highly desirable community.

San Marco

Close to San Jose, beautiful San Marco is also an historic community but with a very different vibe. It’s history, beginning in the early 20th century, included the notion of radiating out from the central square, replete with a fountain, and with a Piazza San Marco feel from Venice, Italy. San Marco features other squares too that offer so much to do and see. Shopping, dining, entertainment – San Marco truly has it all!

Many of San Marco's homes and buildings reflect the Mediterranean Revival style, like San Jose, which add to the area's historic charm. The neighborhood is also home to several historic landmarks, including the San Marco Theatre, an art deco movie house that has entertained Jax residents since 1938.

San Marco is a well-known foodie destination too. Everything from upscale dining like Matthews to fun and cozy spots like 1937 Spirits and Eatery and the modern Italian Taverna. No one leaves San Marco hungry!

San Jose and San Marco are two of Jacksonville's most desirable neighborhoods, each offering a unique blend of history, culture, and modern amenities. Whether you're drawn to the historic elegance of San Jose or the vibrant culture of San Marco, these neighborhoods provide an exceptional quality of life. As a Jax realtor, I can help you unlock the charm and appeal of both San Jose and San Marco and help you find the perfect home here.
